“Catherine’s work conveys both the spiritual and the physical presence of the Hawaiian landscape. Her use of color and light is wholly original. To me, she is the Georgia O’Keeffe of Hawaiʻi.”

Volcano Art Center Gallery in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park
January 9 – February 14, 2021
The widely acclaimed Volcano Art Center Gallery invited Catherine to exhibit seventeen of her paintings in a five-week solo show that opened on January 9, 2021. This historic gallery is located on the rim of Kilauea caldera in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
A steady flow of art lovers visited the exhibit which began with a Zoom opening attended by thirty-three people from across the country. Lively discussions ensued during the show about the inspiration for Catherine’s paintings, her color selection, composition, and painting process.
Halemaʻumaʻu crater’s new eruption commenced three weeks prior to the exhibit’s opening and lit up the night sky with shifting crimson hues that danced with the volcanic gas cloud.
MidSummer Art Celebration
Juried show
Wailoa Center, Hilo, Hawaiʻi
June 7 – 26, 2019
The opening reception for the juried show Midsummer Art Celebration 2019 was replete with lively art discussions, in spite of less than a year having passed since the end of the island’s devastating Kilauea eruption – when its summit crater floor dropped 1600 feet and 700 houses were claimed by lava flows.
Wailoa Center catches the passerby’s eye with its distinctive circular architecture, lava rock ramp and beautiful landscaping. Its airy central atrium displays original artworks suspended from a high open-beam ceiling. In the second-floor exhibition area, Catherine’s paintings, Metamorphosis and Elemental, depict Kilauea crater after the 2018 eruption. The surrounding park with lagoon and tropical foliage is graced by stunning views of Mauna Kea. Photos by Tom Peek.

Fairmont Orchid Resort, Kohala coast, Hawaiʻi
January 1 – 5, 2018
The annual Waimea Ocean Film Festival spotlights the world’s oceans and ocean-going cultures by featuring award-winning films, filmmaker Q&A sessions, speakers and exhibits. Catherine was honored to share her Hawaiʻi Island oil paintings with festival participants alongside two other island visual artists, Caren Loebel-Fried and Sophie Twigg-Smith Teururai.
Film festival participants were surrounded by island-themed oil paintings in the resort’s ballroom exhibit area. Catherine displayed ten works from her Kilauea, Mauna Loa and Plants of Hawaiʻi series. Photos by Tom Peek.
