Heart to Heart

Halema‘uma‘u crater is home to Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, and is a wahikapu or sacred place. In March 2008, after twenty-six years of quiet, Halema‘uma‘u came alive with billowing gas emissions, pulsating red glow, and intermittent explosive eruptions. Watching the grace and power of the plume from the far side of Kilauea’s caldera, I felt awe, humility … and inspiration.
