Greater Forces


Standing on the rim of Kilauea caldera at night, I watch and listen. My view of Halemaʻumaʻu crater is unobstructed, and the crimson-hued gases undulate steadily out of the erupting vent. Suddenly the plume explodes into enormous, billowing clouds that fill the sky above the crater. My heart pounds. I’m transfixed.
